Outdoors, mold growth is generally a harmless, natural process that plays a key role in the breakdown of leaves, wood, and other plant debris. But when it moves indoors, it can do some serious damage to your home (or building) and create health problems.
Mold is a member of the fungi kingdom. It is a rather odd organism that in some ways is more like a plant and in other ways is more like an animal. There are thousands of different types, from relatively harmless to very toxic, but even the kinds that are relatively harmless to your health can spread fast and destroy whatever they're growing on, so you will want to remove these fungi no matter where they're growing.
Reproduction is by means of spores which are like tiny seeds that float through the air. If there's moisture, warmth and a food source, they can begin growing and spreading wherever they land. They're all around us, invisible to the eye, so the only way to prevent mold growth is to keep moisture to a minimum.
Household mold is common in places that are chronically damp because of high humidity;areas of high water use (bathroom, laundry room, kitchen sink area); leaks (attics, basements) ,closed up areas with lack of good air circulation (closets, crawl spaces, basements, attics) or if your home has suffered flood damage. Monitor these areas regularly and test if you suspect anything growing or detect a musty odor.
