Mold Allergies

Exposure to certain types of mold can cause a variety of health problems, the most common of which are allergic reactions, such as irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs. At least 15 million people are known to be affected in these ways.

Those at the greatest risk for reactions to mold and mildew include children, the elderly, people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, people with other kinds of allergies and those with already weakened immune systems.

Mold allergies can occur from touching, inhaling, or ingesting. Reactions can arise immediately or be delayed up to six hours. They can be mild or severe. Common symptoms include respiratory problems, such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and labored breathing; nasal or sinus symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and scratchy throat; eye irritations such as light sensitivity, and watering, red, or burning eyes; skin irritations such dermatitis; and general malaise, fatigue, and headache. Even in non-allergic (non-sensitized) people, mold can cause these kinds of problems.

While mold is present to some degree in most homes, most is not problematic. However, in damp areas that support rapid growth and significant spreading – such as bathrooms, basements, attics, laundry rooms, etc. or in areas that have experienced flooding or leaks–allergies can become a problem. Mold and mildew can also occur in house plants, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture, foam rubber pillows, heating and air conditioning vents and anywhere that moisture, warmth and lack of circulation or ventilation exists.
