How To Remove Red Mold

Mold is a form of fungi; it is not bacteria. It requires a fungicide to kill it. Indeed, if you want to be sure you are getting a product that will kill the fungi all the way down to its roots, choose an EPA-registered fungicide for best results.

Although red mold is not as common as its green and black cousins, it does show up on walls, in bathrooms, in carpets, in air conditioning coils and pans, in clothes and laundry and other places. It can cause a number of health symptoms to general malaise and not feeling well to more serious health effects. Its color ranges from pink to orange to bright red and shades in between.

And like all mold and mildew, it will eat away whatever it is growing on, and so should be eradicated as soon as possible.

Two common forms of fungi with red or pink coloring are Aspergillus versicolor which is considered a toxic mold and Rhodotorula which also has health effects.

If you're going to undertake removal yourself, do so only if the area is quite small (10 square feet or less) and only if you're not dealing with a toxic mold variety. You can test what type you're dealing with if you're not sure. Always wear full protective gear during any testing, cleaning or remediation and always follow all product directions and EPA guidelines when attempting remediation.
