Mold needs moisture to grow, so it’s not uncommon to find mold (or bacteria) in a washing machine, or to smell musty odors coming from the appliance. Front-loading washing machines seem particularly prone to developing mold-growth problems.
In a front-loading washing machine, mold can grow on the gasket around the door. Mold can also grow on surfaces that are not regularly cleaned by the normal washing cycle – such as under the lid on a top-loading machine, under the agitator, or on the splash shield assembly or tub ring seal (some components can only be accessed by removing the cabinet top).
